Andrea Norberg retires as executive director after four decades in nursing, 22 years at Rutgers Nursing’s FXB Center.
Jamie Steiger is named the center’s interim executive director
Andrea Norberg, DNP, MSN, RN, has retired as executive director of the François-Xavier Bagnoud Center (FXB Center) at Rutgers University School of Nursing, following 22 years at the center—17 as executive director—and more than 40 years in nursing. Jamie Steiger, MPH, MBA, BASW, became interim executive director on Oct. 1.
Norberg launched her career in the mid-1980s as a pediatric nurse, at the onset of the HIV epidemic and shortly before the FXB Center was established.
She joined the center in 2003 as director of administration and finance and adjunct assistant professor of nursing. She advanced to director of national HIV/AIDS programs just two years later and was named executive director in 2008.
“Dr. Norberg has been a courageous leader through times of great change in health care and education,” said Angela Starkweather, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean and professor at Rutgers School of Nursing. “She elevated the FXB Center as a trusted national and international resource, never losing sight of the individuals, families, and communities at the heart of its mission. We are deeply grateful for her extraordinary service.”
Under Norberg’s leadership, the FXB Center has managed approximately $35 million annually in grant-funded programs and employed over 200 staff. She has served as principal investigator and co-investigator on federal and state grants, and as a board member or advisor to numerous committees and organizations in the U.S. and internationally.
From 2020 to 2022, she was executive director and CEO of Rutgers Community Health Center.
Earlier in her career, Norberg held leadership roles at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center’s Babies and Children’s Hospital, Capgemini Ernst & Young, and the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
She is a proud graduate of Rutgers School of Nursing, where she earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in 2018.
Steiger, the newly appointed interim executive director, has worked at the FXB Center for 21 years, including the past 12 as director of administration and finance. At FXB, she is also the principal investigator for the state-funded “Ending HIV Epidemic Awareness Campaigns” project.
Before joining the FXB Center, she held student affairs and program leadership positions at New York University and Stanford University and worked with Heartbeat Family Partnership, supporting children with disabilities and their families. She is certified as a leadership coach for organizational performance by the International Coach Federation.
“I am grateful to Dr. Norberg for her mentorship and the vision she brought to the FXB Center,” Steiger said. “In my new role, I look forward to building on her legacy with our team and advancing the center’s impact.”
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Andrea for her 22 years of dedicated service and congratulate her on her well-deserved retirement. We also extend our warmest congratulations to Jamie on her new acting appointment and wish them a smooth transition into their new chapter.
