National Training Curriculum for the Provision of Care and Support Services for Children Orphaned or Made Vulnerable by HIV/AIDS

Image of cover of the Haiti OVC CurriculumThe statistics are alarming: at least 5-15 children out of 100 in Haiti are orphaned after having lost one parent or both. At least 28 out of 100 are considered vulnerable. Since the earthquake on January 12, 2010, the situation of children in Haiti has become even more precarious. It's crucial that orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) receive appropriate care within their communities.

The National Training Curriculum for the Provision of Care and Support Services for Children Orphaned or Made Vulnerable by HIV/AIDS was created to train community-based workers on a variety of topics in community-centered care including: health and nutrition, psychosocial support, economic and educational support, and community mobilization. The manual focuses on the needs of all vulnerable children, whether they are vulnerable due to poverty, HIV, or natural disasters such as the recent earthquake.

The curriculum was developed with a technical advisory group made up of representatives of organizations currently working with OVC in Haiti, under the leadership of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Social Affairs. The facilitator's manual includes a section on training tips and techniques. Available only in French.
